#Philly Construction Alert: Spring Garden Bridge Gets Makeover

Philly's Spring Garden Bridge Under Construction Beginning
Monday, August 11th

Philly commuters, heads up! Beginning Monday, August 11th, the Spring Garden Bridge (which boasts some of the most beautiful views of the Philly city skyline) will be getting a makeover. According to city officials, one of the spans has become structurally deficient and is in the need of joint replacement, new bearings and pier caps.

As the bridge is very heavily traveled by cars, trucks and pedestrians, the construction will not result in a full closure. Instead, repair will take place in pieces, fixing the north side in 2014 and the south side in 2015. This way, one side will always be open and passable for commuters, lessening the effect on traffic backups in Eakins Oval and on I-76.

However, drivers need to be aware that beginning in mid-September, the I-76 off ramp from Spring Garden St. will be closed for 70 days and thus, the highway will not be accessible from the bridge.
I-76 will also be affected by closing the shoulders during the duration of the project, and single lane closures on the highway will also occur periodically.

The project is scheduled to finish in summer 2015.
