GeoTraffic Roadwork Roundup!

This week's Roadwork Roundup includes important road closure, parking and transportation information for Lollapalooza, taking place in Chicago, and the Manchester United v. Real Madrid game in Detroit! What a weekend in the Midwest!

DETROIT:
This Saturday, August 2nd  at 4 pm, a different kind of football takes the field at The Big House. Michigan Stadium will play host to a clash of European soccer Giants: Manchester United and Real Madrid.

Both sides bring a rich history of trophies to the pitch when they face off as part of the International Champions Cup, which is a warm up for the European soccer seasons in England, France, Italy, and Spain.

With over 100,000 fans expected to attend the sold out game, getting there could be problematic for all supporters of the Red Devils and Los Blancos, with construction on Michigan roads playing a large part.

With one of the more heavily traveled roads, Ann Arbor-Saline road going through an improvement project motorists are encouraged to use alternate routes to the stadium to ensure that they’re in place for the start of the game.

The Ann Arbor-Saline Road Exit 175 from/to I-94 is under construction. There will be various lane closures. YOU ARE ADVISED TO SEEK ALTERNATE ROUTES.
Suggested Alternative Routes to Michigan Stadium
• If coming to Ann Arbor FROM THE NORTH, try M-14 Exit 2 - Maple Road. Follow Maple Rd. south as it merges with Stadium Blvd. and leads to the Stadium area.
• If coming to Ann Arbor FROM THE EAST OR NORTHEAST, consider using US-23 Exit 41 - Plymouth Road. Take Plymouth Rd. west to Huron Parkway to Geddes (south of the river) then west to approach the Stadium area. Or, to park in areas east of State Street or along South Industrial Highway, follow US-23 to Exit 37 - Washtenaw Avenue, and head west. Continue straight onto Stadium Blvd. at the split and head west toward the Stadium area.
• If coming FROM THE WEST, utilize I-94 Exit 172 - Jackson Road. Take Jackson Rd. to Stadium Blvd., turn right (south) and continue toward the Stadium area.
As you arrive on game day, you can expect to receive route information via messages on electric boards on both the highway as well as local roadways.
Please follow the instructions of law enforcement personnel directing traffic post-game, as all traffic will be guided away from Michigan Stadium to assist fans in leaving the area as quickly and efficiently as possible.

With the heavy influx of traffic on Saturday, parking will also be problematic. It will be on a first-come/first-serve basis for everyone with the Green Lot at the UM Golf Course on Stadium Boulevard being open to ADA only, however parking will be open to the public at the UM Golf Course lots on State Street and the Driving Range on Main Streets. Look for parking to be made available at Pioneer High School on Main Street and various UM surface lots and parking structures around the campus on game day. Some shuttle services will be running, however they are not a free service and are an additional cost.

CHICAGO:
The Lollapalooza Music Festival will be held in Grant Park this weekend in downtown Chicago. Over 100,000 people are expected to attend each of the 3 days of the music festival, which runs from Friday, August 3rd to Sunday, August 5th.

Some street closures area already in place, with full closures extending through this week and into early next week. According to the City of Chicago, these street closures were in effect in the Grant Park area beginning August 1st:

July 23 – August 9BalboLake Shore DriveColumbus
July 25 – August 8JacksonLake Shore DriveColumbus
August 1 – August 6BalboColumbusMichigan
August 1 – August 6JacksonColumbusMichigan
August 1 – August 6Congress ParkwayColumbusMichigan

With the high volume of traffic expected in the area on top of existing closures for events such as the Wicker Park Fest, Jeff Fest at Jefferson Park, Taste of Lincoln Ave, Aerosmith and the Cubs in town and the Big 10 run closing parts of Lake Shore Drive on Saturday, motorists can expect major delays on streets downtown and heavy volume on area highways. The CTA will be running most lines with increased frequency to accomodate for increased capacity, and riders are encouraged to check www.transitchicago.com before riding.
